Nancy Nord, the acting chair of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, has spoken out about the lack of safety controls in the toy industry, the Associated Press reported. Several highly-publicized recalls over the past year have caused concern in the industry and in a speech at the annual American International Toy Fair Expo, Nord warned that the industry has the obligation to regulate itself.
"I will not tolerate this industry ... not complying with our regulations," Nord said, according to the AP. When it comes to toy safety, "we all need to take responsibility." The CPSC has come under fire for not acting quickly enough to get hazardous products off of shelves. The CPSC and the Toy Industry Association are currently working to develop mandatory testing standards.
