NRF Warns of Online Auction Sites

The National Retail Federation has issued a consumer alert about common household items sold through some online auction sites. According to the organization, organized crime rings are targeting health and personal care products, which can be stolen and possibly tainted before being sold online. Items such as baby formula or over-the-counter medicines can easily spoil if they are not kept in a temperature-controlled environment. The NRF also identified a list of top health and beauty products stolen and sold online, including Advil, Cover Girl Cosmetics, Oil of Olay, Rogaine and Visine. The NRF's warning comes after a high-profile crime ring was busted for selling stolen beauty products online.
"Criminals often take advantage of honest shoppers by selling stolen merchandise through online auction sites," said Joseph LaRocca, NRF Vice President of Loss Prevention. "Many health and beauty products on these sites may have expired or be spoiled, posing real health risks to the buyer. The pennies a shopper may save buying drugstore products through Internet auction sites are not worth the potential health risks. Once the legitimate distributor is taken out of the equation, there is no guarantee that merchandise is safe."
